NASA LASSIE Grant

Penn Department of Earth and Environmental Science, Hayden Hall, Philadelphia Pa                3/6-12/23

 

  • Participated in a NASA-funded project focused on improving robot-aided exploration of planetary environments, in collaboration with leading researchers from Texas A&M University, University of Pennsylvania, Oregon State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the NASA Johnson Space Center

  • Contributed to research on bio-inspired robots with adaptive leg movements for traversing various planetary surfaces, utilizing direct-drive actuator technology

  • Conducted soil, flora, and bacterial sampling to analyze the geochemical and taphonomic characteristics of White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

  • Characterized groundcover biodiversity to understand possible formation processes, ecological influences, and geomorphological biosignatures.  

  • Gained hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and software and collaborated with a diverse team of experts, including roboticists, earth and planetary scientists, and cognitive scientists, to expand knowledge of planetary environments and exploration strategies

 

Pfefferkorn Paleobotany Laboratory

  • Describing novel, Incertae sedis taxa of Mississippian period flora 

  • Follow the dispersal and taphonomy of an assemblage collected from the Ambo group, later swept into the La Mina basin during a fluvial event from the more mountainous Cordillera da Costa.

  • Exploring the paleoecology and paleoclimatology of Gondwana as it experienced icehouse to greenhouse transitions, providing insights about the icehouse climate state we inhabit.

  • Examination of Moscovian fossils entombed in anchimetamorphic slate from the St. Clair locality of Pennsylvania. Exploring the rare taphonomy and paleoecological conditions, which are known only to one other site. 

  • Simulating plant evolution and taphonomy to better understand the biases of fitness in the fossil record.

 

Independent Biostratinomy Research

In collaboration with Penn Anthropology, Philadelphia Pa                                                                    3/21 - 10/21

 

  • Studied above-ground, non-gastric decomposition in porcine assemblages over 3 experiments. Decay was examined through the stages of disarticulation, dispersal, and accumulation.

  • Collected soil data, tracked rainfall, took photographs and other qualitative observations.

 

Caron Skills for Success Workshop

  • Learned about health-related careers such as psychiatry and gynecology, as well as public health services.

  • Progressed through a competitive grant selection process: designed a pamphlet to advance a public health messaging initiative.

  • Created a tri-fold brochure to promote vaccines; pamphlets were printed and distributed throughout the community: e.g. local doctors offices, grocery stores, schools, etc.

  • Brochure was published in Berks County Medical Society Medical Record, a local medical journal.

  • Attended online lectures once a week, engaged with presenting physician-scholars. 

  • Learned about cutting-edge treatments, models, and cancer therapies, such as CAR T-cell therapy.

  • Review previous cases to practice investigating the manner of death
